About Abraxas Youth Center – South Mountain
The Abraxas Youth Center (AYC) in South Mountain, Pennsylvania is a residential treatment facility for delinquent young males between 12 and 18 years old. This facility is located on state-owned grounds that also houses the South Mountain Restoration Center.
AYC is a multi-service facility that offers treatment for male firesetters, male sexual offenders and other youth who need a residential setting. Clients will learn to take responsibility for their actions, explore their life experiences, and participate in specially designed treatment programs including substance use. They offer both open and secure settings.
At admission, your child will receive a psychiatric evaluation and various assessments to help staff form a customized treatment plan to suit their needs.
I like how extensive the treatment options at AYC are. They offer teen anger management education, CBT, self regulation, healthy masculinity, and much more. Residents will participate in group counseling every day and will also have individual counseling sessions once a week. They’ll meet with a clinician bi-weekly.
This program puts emphasis on trauma recovery and issues related to PTSD.
I like that AYC has a multi-phase program that supports teens from admission all the way to discharge. The early stages focus on problematic behaviors and critical skills like impulse control. Then, as they get a grasp of these concepts, they’ll move on to intermediate and advanced skills like moral reasoning, developing empathy, triggers and cues and relapse prevention.
