Mothers Making a Change is a drug treatment program for adult women located in Marietta, Georgia. Operating under the Highland Rivers Foundation, they serve pregnant and mothering women who experience difficulties in maintaining their sobriety without a structured residential setting. Their offerings include residential treatment, a partial hospitalization program, and aftercare services.

Currently, they’re looking for major donations so they can relocate their Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program from apartments in Cobb County to more permanent, long term housing. Their goal is to provide services for at least 25 women and their children.

Their residential treatment is for those who need mental health and physical stabilization before the rest of their recovery journey can begin. The program supports mothers and their children, along with expectant mothers. Traditional substance use disorder treatment is provided. This program allows for a safe and structured environment with 24/7 care during the initial phases of treatment. This allows for stability mentally and physically, with accommodations and meals taken care of. Focus is then placed on healing the family unit and exploring the psychological reasons for the addiction. Substance abuse counseling and other clinical approaches to treatment will be administered.

Their day treatment program is highly structured yet allows for the flexibility of returning home in the evening. This program requires that there is no immediate danger that would require inpatient hospitalization. It incorporates clinical treatment practices for addiction, such as medications, individual and group therapy, and trauma related counseling. Evidence based approaches, including cognitive and dialectical behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing are incorporated into the treatment process.

Individual therapy creates the space to explore the psychological challenges associated with addiction. With the help of a professional, individuals are given the space and direction to talk about and process their emotions. Often this includes unresolved trauma, anger, depression, anxiety, and the need for more control or autonomy in life. Through the therapeutic process, future care needs can be addressed to set up a plan for continued support upon graduation from the program.
