Your treatment begins with a diagnostic and clinical assessment that may indicate the need for medication management to address co-occurring psychological disorders or to reduce cravings from an opioid use disorder or alcohol use disorder. The assessment is completed by one or two licensed therapists and can take about two hours to complete. They gather information about your symptoms, mental health history, medication treatment and current stressors. They learn about your current living situation, family background, general health and trauma history.

This information is gathered to develop a comprehensive and personalized program. Additional testing may be required to identify a developmental disability, but clinicians can diagnose a mental health or substance use disorder during the initial evaluation. Your customized program typically includes individual therapy using a scheduled in-person visit. Your therapist will build on your strengths to help you learn different coping strategies to deal with life’s challenges and past traumas.

Your program may include family therapy to promote a supportive environment at home and to help family members who have been challenged by your addiction. In a group therapy session, you have the opportunity to work with others who experience the same challenges.

Adults who experience severe and persistent mental illness with or without a substance use disorder may benefit from psychosocial rehabilitation that addresses recovery strategies, education and relapse prevention programs. Your program can also include tailored case management to give you extra support and help you connect with community resources. These wraparound services provide a whole person approach to substance use disorder and mental health treatment, providing you with the best option for achieving recovery.
