LSS – Lutheran Social Services – Winnebago County Shelter Care

Winnebago County Shelter Care is a shelter program for youth in Oshkosh, Wisconsin who are between the ages of 10 and 17. They operate under Lutheran Social Services. Most of the young people who stay here have a troubled past, and some may also be dealing with alcohol and drug addictions. They can go here while they recover, receiving residential treatment for their physical and mental needs. There isn’t a cost for participating in the program.

While they live temporarily at the shelter, the clients will stick to a structured schedule that gives them a routine and provides them with a sense of order for possibly the first time. At different points throughout the day, they’ll participate in educational programs and support groups. There are life skills workshops and recreational activities as well. They’ll work with their care team to create a schedule that works best for them. Some clients also attend a school in the community but this isn’t always possible.

Something I liked about this facility was that they’re sensitive to their client’s differences. They work hard to make sure everyone feels comfortable during their time in the program and make it a point to embrace cultural, ethnic, and spiritual differences.
