About University of North Dakota – Counseling Center – Grand Forks

The University of North Dakota’s Counseling Center offers accessible and confidential clinical support to students with mental health and substance use issues. They help students reach their fullest academic and personal potential via tailored support. The Princeton Review named the center as one of 16 schools that support student mental health and wellbeing.

It is located at McCannel Hall 200 right at the heart of the University of North Dakota campus in Grand Forks, North Dakota. This makes it easy to access by students, staff and even visitors. Major campus roads like 2nd Avenue North and University Avenue connect it to the rest of the city. The campus is near I-29 for regional accessibility.

They offer a judgment free space where you can explore your substance use and work on making positive changes. Their substance use services start with an intake assessment to evaluate your symptoms. They’ll then create a plan to address them.

You’ll mainly receive level 1 outpatient treatment if you’ve mild to moderate symptoms of substance use disorder. This involves individual and group counseling that helps you build strong coping skills and prevent relapse. They may use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) to help you identify and change negative thought patterns and behaviors that drive substance use. You’ll also receive education about addiction and substance use.

Specialized intervention services are available for those at the early stage of substance use. This includes brief alcohol screening and intervention for college students (BASICS) and substance use prevention and intervention (SUPI). Both programs encourage you to reflect on your substance use risks and set goals to make healthier decisions. This reduces the chance of future issues.

They also offer peer support groups where students work together to stay sober and help each other stay on track. The group helps members build connections with others who can provide positive support and encouragement. This makes it easier to stick with sobriety and develop a solid network of people who get what you’re going through.

The great thing about the University Counseling Center is that they help students address other issues other than mental health and substance use. They help with stress management, academic issues, relationship problems and trauma like sexual assaults. They also offer mental health and substance use crisis intervention, consultative services and personal/psychological evaluation.

They can refer you to local community services on campus or in the Grand Forks area via case management if your needs go beyond what they can provide. For instance, when you’re dealing with severe mental health or substance use issues that require high-intensity treatment. Referral options may include nearby providers within walking distance of the campus including those offering low or sliding-scale fee services.

Programs

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

LGBTQ Program

Recovery is most successful when clients feel accepted and validated by their peers and treatment providers. Facilities that offer LGBTQ-inclusive programming are committed to creating a safe space where everyone can grow and recover without fear of judgment or discrimination. They will have dedicated policies in place to create a safe and supportive environment that fosters free expression.

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
