About Acenda Integrated Health – Mendham
Daytop New Jersey – The Academy in Mendham, New Jersey, was an alternative special education school for youth in grades 7-12. The school was operated by Daytop New Jersey. Along with their educational curriculum they provided several mental health services for students including counseling for substance use disorders (SUD). They closed their Mendham campus in May of 2020.
They were fully licensed by the New Jersey State Department of Education and accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). The school was also part of several professional organizations dedicated to education and student support.
Students’ home school districts sometimes covered their tuition, and there were options for scholarship assistance for families in need. Students were referred for admission by school professionals, treating therapists and parents or guardians.
Staff supported students academically and personally. With small class sizes the teachers could provide individual attention and create a strong learning environment. The team included certified general and special education teachers, a state certified school psychologist and a student assistance counselor.
Students received a well rounded education that met New Jersey’s Core Curriculum Content Standards. Beyond academics the students explored personal interests on Fridays through activities like art, music, yoga and equine therapy.
Students had access to integrated therapeutic services. The school psychologist provided individual and group therapy. For students needing more intensive support, which often included addiction treatment, outpatient treatment services were available.
Group therapy at The Academy covered a variety of topics including social skills, anti bullying, anger management and character development. AA and NA groups were also offered weekly to support students in recovery.
The Academy’s impact on the community will be missed. One law enforcement professional praised the program for its thoroughness and professionalism, while a former student credited the staff with transforming her life and helping her build a brighter future.
