About Army Substance Abuse Program – ASAP – Fort Drum

Members of the Armed Forces face unique challenges when it comes to their mental health because of their line of work. Unfortunately, experimenting with substance use can be an avenue some service members turn to to help cope with the life challenges they face.

To help service members overcome these challenges and prepare when needed for combat, the Army Substance Abuse Program in Fort Drum, New York, offers a range of services including evidence based care including counseling and therapy to help them overcome the struggles that are causing or are being brought on by substance use. This program is offered through the Soldier and Family Readiness Center, where you’ll find many programs to improve your life.

Services are offered through an outpatient setting. Care extends to all DoD ID card holders including active duty, retired, and reserve military members and their families.

The Soldier and Family Readiness Center has an employee assistance program where service members and their loved ones show symptoms of addiction. This program helps get the ball rolling for effective addiction recovery treatment if you or a loved one is at risk or experiencing other life hardships like financial stress, workplace conflict, and even family conflict because of alcohol or drugs.

From there, you and your case management team work to find healthier ways to cope with stress that don’t include drugs. That way, when frustrations on the job place mount, you’ll be ready to meet these challenges head on.

In the Army Substance Abuse Program, there are different risk reduction programs and suicide prevention programs that help strengthen a service member’s mental outlook on recovery.

Before essential life and recovery skills can develop, however, you can use these programs to empower and motivate you to seek lasting change. This is done through awareness and education to tear down the stigma of addiction that many people in the Armed Forces struggle with.
