About Baltimore City Juvenile Justice Center – Baltimore

The Maryland Department of Juvenile Services operates the all male Baltimore City Juvenile Justice Center in Baltimore, Maryland. This is where young people are detained until their court date or placement. They mostly house male youth and can accommodate up to 120 individuals at one time. All of their employees have received trauma informed care training.

Daily visitation is offered seven days a week and requires a 24-hour notice from the family to the facility case manager. Mealtimes and school hours are off limits for both in person and virtual visitation appointments.

Acceptable visitors are those who the young person designates as being of significant importance to them and who provide them with support.
A coach, mentor and instructor or other family member may be included in this program.

Every young person who enters the facility is subjected to a behavioral health screening. Clinicians with certifications or licenses offer the services that are available, which include assessments, psychoeducation and crisis counseling. They also provide medication management, substance use education and services for human trafficking survivors.

Upon entering the facility, every young person is given a health evaluation. The facility has nursing staff on duty around the clock to attend to each young person’s medical needs. There’s also a designated hospital emergency contact and a doctor who is on call. To provide programming for young people at the facility, they collaborate with churches, civic associations and community groups.

They give young people the chance to take part in leadership development, fitness and sports and book clubs. Workforce development, writing competitions and the development of life skills are additional activities. They set up the technology program, chess and fine arts as well as a fatherhood program and faith-based activities. Young people housed in this center spend six hours a day, five days a week in school there.
