They will give you an assessment in which they will ask about your psychological history and drug use. The staff is trained in many therapeutic methods, and your assessment will determine which is right for you.
They may use unconventional methods like hypnotherapy which takes you between your conscious and the subconscious to get at the root of problems. They will play music and you will enter a state of deep relaxation, The trance the therapist will put you in is similar to daydreaming.
Some people are best treated with methods of therapy that focus on the unique perspective of the individual. For example, you may be treated with Gestalt therapy. This method focuses on the client’s feelings in the present moment. You will be encouraged to engage in experiences beyond simply talking such as reenactment, art, and role playing to address your emotions.
Like most facilities, they also use cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) which teaches people to think differently to change hurtful behaviors. Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) is often used to treat dual diagnosis clients. It helps people manage emotions by teaching them skills like mindfulness and distress tolerance along with emotional regulation.
Your therapist will interview you to get to know you. You will discuss the emotions you want to change. You will trace that emotion back to the first time you ever experienced it. They will help you find a new way to process your memories and your beliefs about yourself.
