About Child Guidance Resource Centers – Havertown
Child Guidance Resource Centers is a mental health facility located in Havertown, Pennsylvania. They treat children and adults for many different types of mental health issues. As part of this they provide drug and alcohol education and prevention services for children and their parents to participate in together.
This facility offers two main drug prevention programs here. One is for families and one for teens.
Prevention programs are designed to give kids and their parents the knowledge and the skills to make healthy choices. They help to build self-esteem in children so they are less susceptible to peer pressure.
The Strengthening Families program is for families with kids between the ages of 6 and 11. It lets parents and children learn how to prevent substance and tobacco use. You and your kids will attend 14 sessions. These sessions are given at night and dinner is provided.
You will learn how to set reasonable rules for your kids and your children will learn how to follow them. You will learn about the social and emotional competence of children and when they should and should not make decisions for themselves.
Kids will be given coping skills for dealing with stressful situations. They will also learn what to do when other kids try to pressure them to take drugs.
Project Toward No Drug Abuse is designed for kids between the ages of 14 and 19. They will have two 50-minute sessions a week for six weeks.
The program is based on research done at the University of Southern California which identified some factors that can prejudice whether or not someone will use drugs. That includes their ability to make decisions and the things that motivate them.
Group leaders use the Socratic method of teaching. This means they will pose questions to the group and the kids will answer in a discussion format. They may use role-playing and psychodrama in these sessions too.
These are the programs at CGRC that focus on substance use. But they also have many other programs to help kids and adults alike with mental health including therapy and medication management.
