Claxton-Hepburn Medical Center is a private, nonprofit community hospital located at 214 King Street in Ogdensburg, New York. The hospital has 127 beds which includes 28 adult beds for acute mental health treatment. Additionally, there’s a 12 bed behavioral unit for children and adolescents. Adult care includes substance use disorder (SUD) treatment, though clients may be referred to a nearby location for more targeted and intensive SUD treatment. This hospital won’t deny services to anyone regardless of ability to pay.

The hospital is only a 10 minute walk from the Fort de la Presentation site on the shores of the St. Lawrence River. The Abbe Picquet Walking Trail is an easy one mile loop walk that meanders along the Oswegatchie and St. Lawrence Rivers. This is a beautiful place to begin your mental health and SUD recovery.

Substance use is often accompanied by co occurring mental health disorders. The hospital has outpatient and inpatient treatment for bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, depression, anxiety, and other co occurring mental health disorders.

The Wellness Center at the hospital provides services for children and adults. One of the unique services they offer is genetic testing for psychotropic medication management. Genetic testing indicates what medications your body will respond to best. This is cutting edge treatment for mental health disorders.

The Wellness Center offers integrated care with the primary care services at the hospital. You don’t need a physician referral to access the services at the Wellness Center, and they offer same day crisis appointments. The hospital’s emergency room offers after hours crisis care.

Additionally, the clinic offers electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for clients with treatment resistant depression. The medical staff administers ECT while you’re under anesthesia. It involves an electrical pulse to the brain that stimulates a controlled seizure that is effective in resetting the brain and controlling depression.
