About First Step Farm – Men’s Facility – Candler
First Step Farm treats substance abuse issues for men in Candler, North Carolina. Their residential program serves all counties of North Carolina. The first thing guests may notice is the beautiful backdrop of the Pisgah Mountains, just a short drive from Asheville.
This program offers a different kind of treatment experience. The goal is to help guests overcome addiction through self determined efforts and abilities. You’ll have a team of leaders who help you understand and address the root problem of your addiction so you can gain self respect, restore self concepts, be supported by positive mentorships, and forge a path to recovery.
One of the ways they help you increase confidence is by providing vocational skills. Their Work Therapy Program allows you to be productive while learning trades that you can work in after treatment. The program is known as a high quality vegetable supplier and as a farming community.
The men work in 19 greenhouses growing numerous vegetables, like peppers, cabbage, broccoli, and tomatoes. They also have vegetable fields that contribute produce for the Farm’s Retail store in downtown Candler. Residents can also work in the facility’s kitchens and learn to cook and/or earn an inspection certification for North Carolina that allows them to perform vehicle inspections.
They believe this alternative program helps you work, learn, and recover. You’ll earn wages while learning discipline, structure, responsibility, and accountability. These activities keep you engaged in recovery and productive with structured routines. The exercise and nutrition included in the program keep you fueled and moving, which can help promote relaxation and reduce stress.
The rural environment sets the tone for peace and tranquility, away from everyday pressures and distractions. You’ll learn to work with others and move through a person-centered treatment plan focusing on your goals and needs.
