Independence Center is a behavioral health and substance abuse recovery facility in Waukegan, Illinois. The Center provides mental health, substance abuse treatment, and treatment for co-occurring disorders in an outpatient setting.
Outpatient
Independence Center provides individual and group counseling to address mental illness and substance abuse. Specialized groups include a Mental Illness/Substance Abuse (MISA) support group for individuals who have a history of both mental illness and substance abuse. MISA group programming utilizes traditional 12-step concepts of recovery along with other self-help formats.
A relaxation and coping skills group helps individuals develop coping skills to self-soothe and better manage anxiety, stress, and symptoms of mental illness. Various relaxation techniques including meditation, deep breathing, guided and thematic imagery, isometric squeezing techniques, and others are used.
Strategies to cope with symptoms such as depression, poor impulse control, and other issues experienced by individuals with substance abuse or co-occurring disorders are also taught. Individual counseling sessions may be scheduled.

Independence Center offers referrals for educational, vocational, and housing opportunities.
