About Kansas City Indian Center – Kansas City
Kansas City Indian Center is the only Kansas City multi-purpose Social Service Agency serving American Indians. Their goal is to encourage the advancement of the community by promoting traditional and cultural values. The Morning Star Outreach program identifies substance abuse cases in Kansas City, Missouri, and helps individuals and their families develop a recovery plan. In combination with this outreach program, individuals and families also have access to case management to assist them in identifying and connecting with community resources they need to maintain recovery from a substance use disorder.
In addition to in person help, they also provide telehealth and telemedicine to the local community. Online resources include 12 Step meetings held virtually on Zoom once weekly for all recovery groups. The program is unique and provides you with a viable support network within the city when you or a family member is experiencing an addiction to alcohol or drugs.
They also offer prevention components specifically designed to address the cultural aspects of American Indians and their families. This includes outpatient treatment and support recovery, alongside therapeutic interventions to help you deal with a past addiction and related experiences. You can access ongoing recovery services and cultural activities to maintain your connection to tradition. The programs focus on prevention and offering information while advocating for a healthy lifestyle.
They believe that given the opportunity, you can develop positive attitudes and life skills that reduce self-destructive behavior and greatly diminish the risk of substance abuse. The philosophy is based on the belief that Native Americans have an easier time talking with other Native Americans, and so getting help within the community increases the potential for success. The program promotes a positive self-image, wellness habits and improving your decision-making skills so you can pave a path to sobriety.
