La Frontera Center – Thornydale Ranch in Tucson, Arizona is a center dedicated to helping the economically disadvantaged and culturally diverse. It was founded back in 1968 and started with a staff of only five people in a small storefront. Originally they focussed on the area of Tucson with the highest unemployment rate, lowest education level, highest arrest rate, most welfare recipients and highest number of families living within crowded conditions per capita. Now they have over 500 employees and are in the top 10% as far as the size of nonprofit behavioral health treatment centers goes.
They have several different treatment programs for children, adolescents and adults that are focused on helping those with substance abuse problems, co-occurring disorders and serious mental illness. Residents of Pima County can have access to a coordinated and comprehensive network of substance abuse and mental health services as needed.
They conduct comprehensive program evaluations and have obtained several grants for their work as well as some national awards including being named one of the leaders in Dual Diagnosis programs in the US. They also provide language and communication help like translation and interpretation if needed.
