About New Horizons of the Treasure Coast – Vero Beach
Established in 1958, New Horizons of the Treasure Coast in Vero Beach, Florida claims to be the most comprehensive mental health and substance use recovery agency in the region. Believing that compassion, education, and advocacy have the power to bring about positive change, they serve all clients regardless of their ability to pay. Adult and children’s services are offered.
For adults there’s a 30 bed crisis unit, inpatient and outpatient therapies, and a 15 bed detox unit. Case management is available to assist with things like finding supportive housing, connection to community resources, and education for families and significant others.
Their goal is to reduce future admissions to psychiatric hospitals. There are also learning resource centers that teach clients about the nature of addiction and foster independent living skills.
Crisis services for children are also offered. The Frances Langford Children’s Crisis Center is a 20 bed facility for children aged six to 17 that are in need of a mental health or substance use intervention. It operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There’s also outpatient therapy. Referrals may be made by family, community agencies, the courts, or a self referral.
They run a substance abuse prevention program in schools called the Student Assistance Program (SAP). This program helps students develop greater self esteem and coping skills.
There’s also the Community Action Team which provides family centered services to support and sustain children in their family systems and the community. It serves children aged 5 to 21 who have a co-occuring mental health and substance use diagnosis. The focus is on children for whom traditional services have not been adequate.
