About Oxford House – Drug and Alcohol Abuse – Atlanta
Oxford House was a residential addiction treatment center for adults in Rock Hill, South Carolina. This location is permanently closed, but there are others still in operation across the state. This was a self supporting, drug free home for anyone who needed to recover from drug or alcohol abuse in a safe and supportive environment before entering back into society.
Like all Oxford Houses, this facility was democratically run. If you needed somewhere to live after completing a detox or inpatient program, you could call them to set up an interview. Then, you’d meet with the people who lived there already. They’d conduct the interview and vote on whether or not to admit you into the home.
If you were accepted, the next step would be to move in. You’d only have to bring your personal belongings and personal hygiene products. They had beds and all of the essentials already set up, including basic furniture. Their goal is to give you a headstart on reintegrating into society, allowing you to do it slowly instead of all at once. You’d learn basic life skills including how to manage conflict, engage in teamwork, and communicate with others. These are tools you could take with you when you were ready to live on your own again.
One person who’s lived here in the past said it’s been instrumental in changing many lives. Another said it taught them how to build a healthy foundation for recovery.
