About Refuge Ministries – Columbus
The Refuge Ministries is a free, faith based residential recovery program for men in Columbus, Ohio who are struggling with alcohol or drug addiction. Since 1999, they’ve helped thousands of men recover through their 13 month treatment plan, which is spread out across four different phases. Once you’re accepted into the program, there’s no cost to attend.
A unique feature of this center is their approach to recovery, which is called the Process for Transformational Change. This is a Christ centered method that also includes elements of work therapy and peer support. While they’re a Christian organization, you don’t have to be a Christian to attend.
Their program includes four distinct phases. Phase 1 is the Discovery Phase, and it gives you the chance to explore the program, as well as the 138 acre rural property. During this time, you’ll create your personal growth plan, engage in individual counseling, and start a Bible study.
The second phase is called Relational. You’ll split your time between living on campus and working at one of their partner employers. This is also the time when you’ll begin to build bridges with people you may have pushed out in the past through phone calls and letters. You get more independence in Phase 3, when you’ll start working 40 hours a week and reintegrating into society. In the fourth and final phase, they’ll truly prepare you to launch back into your home, life, and community. They’ll also show you how to become a man of God and serve your church.
One man who completed this program says he’s now unrecognizable from the person he was before. Another notes that because of the help he got here, he now has a stronger relationship with his children.
