About Regional Health Systems – Highland Behavioral Health – Highland
Highland Behavioral Health is part of Regional Health Systems, an integrated behavioral healthcare network serving Northwest Indiana. They offer affordable, quality and coordinated care to women, men and children. Services range from substance use recovery and mental healthcare to primary medical and dental care.
They’re the first community mental health providers in Indiana to earn the Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) status. This enables them to provide care at low cost to the underserved and economically disadvantaged. No one gets denied care due to the inability to pay, thanks to the income-based sliding fee scale available for the uninsured and underinsured. They accept Medicaid and several commercial insurance plans.
Highland Behavioral Health focuses mainly on behavioral health including crisis care, outpatient counseling and psychiatry. These services are delivered in a supportive and nurturing outpatient environment. Clients can also access services via telehealth in the comfort of their homes for more flexibility. The facility is situated at Highway Avenue, a mile north of I-80/94 within Lake County.
Highland Behavioral Health boasts a modern 24/7 Crisis C.A.R.E. Unit where a specialized team restores stable functioning to patients during acute psychiatric or substance use crises. Crises may encompass drug overdose, acute withdrawal symptoms and the threat of self-harm.
They adopt a no-wrong-door approach to crisis support here, meaning that no matter how you get in touch with them, they’ll get you the care you need. This ensures you can access care whether you come through the ER, a community organization, law enforcement or self-referral. Crisis C.A.R.E. offers a safe space where you can overcome your crisis and connect to the appropriate level of care for ongoing support. They accept walk-ins and have a dedicated location for ambulance, fire and police drop-offs.
They have a facility in Merrillville, just five miles from Highland Avenue, that offers both residential and intensive outpatient care, including medication-assisted treatment. Others may continue to receive outpatient counseling here or even via telehealth as they navigate recovery. They offer substance use and relapse prevention groups as well as aftercare and problem-solving groups.
