About Rutgers – CAPS – New Brunswick
A wide range of counseling services are available to all Rutgers University students in New Brunswick, New Jersey including undergraduate and graduate students through the Counseling Alcohol and Other Drug Assistance Program and Psychiatric Services (CAPS). They provide free services that guarantee confidentiality while adhering to moral and legal requirements.
For students who are worried about their own substance use or the substance use of a friend or family member they provide specialized support through their Alcohol & Other Drug Assistance Program (ADAP). Services from ADAP include counseling and assessments as well as assistance for students with legal involvement who might need DUI or other courses.
One thing that makes Rutgers stand out is the Recovery Support Program for students in recovery from addiction. This program includes peer recovery groups and sober social events along with on campus recovery housing. This allows students who would otherwise be surrounded by temptations to relapse to have the support and sober environment they need.
The first step for students who want assistance is an evaluation during a phone triage session which establishes the proper degree of care depending on each student’s needs. They give priority to group support and short term therapy for people who need help right away.
A student may be referred to outside providers or receive additional services based on clinical necessity if they require longer term care. This makes sure that every student gets the best care possible whether that means continuing therapy, stabilization or more involved interventions like outpatient programs or psychiatric hospitalization.
