About Shalom House – Portland
Shalom House – Gilman Street in Portland, Maine, offers quality housing for adults with mental illness. They’ve been helping people since 1972. Their vision is to help people navigate the complex systems that keep them from living a normal life with mental illness.
They want to see you successfully integrated into your community. For some people that means help with housing, and for others it’s dealing with a difficult mental healthcare system.
The center partners with MaineCare, The Department of Housing and Urban Development, corporations, and compassionate individuals to achieve their vision. The center administers Maine’s Office of Behavioral Health and can offer rental assistance and housing subsidies. Some choices are group homes, affordable housing, and transitional housing to help you with your goal of independent living.
You can get referrals for different community rehabilitation services that may include substance abuse programs. They also offer a variety of art classes to help you explore self expression. There’s no pressure to create in the working studio space, and you’re encouraged to jump into any type of art project you’d like, alone or with others.
Many clients speak highly of their housing services and referrals for help with problems due to their mental illness. A few clients did think their customer service could be a little better.
