About Sinai Hospital of Baltimore – Department of Psychiatry – Baltimore

The Sinai Hospital of Baltimore’s Department of Psychiatry offers opiate addiction recovery services on its campus in Baltimore, Maryland. As part of the larger Sinai Hospital of Baltimore, it’s well staffed and connected to other medical services. Treatment takes place in a private, clinical setting with state of the art amenities.

The Department of Psychiatry treats individuals with addiction on an outpatient basis only. However, clients experiencing severe mental health issues may be referred to their inpatient psychiatry program.

Dubbed SHARP (Sinai Hospital Addiction Recovery Program), the outpatient program combines drug assisted treatment with other evidence backed approaches, such as therapy. Clients who receive methadone and buprenorphine will be closely monitored throughout treatment to avoid complications. The hospital’s licensed staff administers all drugs.

The inclusion of therapy is vital to the program’s long term success. Behavioral therapy shows clients the connections between their thoughts, emotions, and actions, revealing the stressful triggers that lead to opiate abuse. The end goal of treatment is to replace unhealthy behaviors that lead to addiction with substitutes that promote healthy coping skills and maintain stability.

Outpatient services are preferred when clients are experiencing mild symptoms and are currently in a stable living situation. Still, clients who come to the program in crisis may get referred to one of the department’s two psychiatric units for stabilization. These units are secure clinical settings with 24 monitoring and staff. Each unit is unisex, with 24 beds for adults 18 and older.

Treatment plans in the psychiatric unit vary between clients. They generally include a structured day of therapeutic activities and private meetings with a care team. Medication management is also provided. The length of treatment is determined by need, and clients are given an aftercare plan for continuing treatment and recovery before they are released.

The Sinai Hospital of Baltimore is accredited by the Joint Commission, the Commission on the Accreditation of Rehab Facilities.

Adult Program

Adult rehab programs include therapies tailored to each client's specific needs, goals, and recovery progress. They are tailored to the specific challenges adult clients may face, including family and work pressures and commitments. From inpatient and residential treatment to various levels of outpatient services, there are many options available. Some facilities also help adults work through co-occurring conditions, like anxiety, that can accompany addiction.

Young Adult Program

Young adulthood can be an exciting, yet difficult, time of transition. Individuals in their late teens to mid-20s face unique stressors related to school, jobs, families, and social circles, which can lead to a rise in substance use. Rehab centers with dedicated young adult programs will include activities and amenities that cater to this age group, with an emphasis on specialized counseling, peer socialization, and ongoing aftercare.
