Located in Auburn, Maine, Spurwink Adult Behavioral Health is a very unique clinic that offers substance misuse treatment and mental health treatment on top of that. This dual diagnosis center aims to promote the well-being of their clients who are suffering from drug or alcohol addictions and mental health disorders that are co-occurring.
They use some well-researched treatment strategies like cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing. They provide some really in-depth psychiatric evaluations, medication management, therapy, psychiatric nursing, case management, and employment support. All of these things are administered by board-certified psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, and clinical social workers.
They also provide intensive case management and psychiatric care to help individuals achieve the kind of stability they’re looking for and needing. Their outpatient therapy services are available to anyone who wants a little bit more stability in their lives, but at the same time wants to keep the structure and routine of their lives intact. They also have a residential service that helps children and adolescents struggling with mental health and behavioral health issues.
Another part of their clinic provides a service called the Living Room Crisis Center. From what I’ve gathered, this is the first program of its kind in all of Maine and is a voluntary alternative for individuals with substance abuse issues and those experiencing a mental health crisis. What also intrigued me is that Spurwink is a certified community behavioral health clinic. They help underserved populations, which include veterans, asylum seekers, and people experiencing homelessness. Some of their veteran-focused services include specialized outreach, needs-based assessments, transportation support, and suicide prevention.
