About North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation – Tompkins Corrections Center – Jamestown
The North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (DOCR) runs the Tompkins Corrections Center on Circle Drive in Jamestown, North Dakota. This facility houses up to 60 men and 30 women in separate buildings and provides around the clock substance use and mental health treatment services for offenders. The Tompkins Center is at the State Hospital and contracts with DOCR. The programs are run by the Department of Human Services (DHS). Services are provided through funding from the North Dakota DOCR.
The substance use programs address addiction and co-occurring mental health disorders. Offenders receive an evaluation and diagnosis first. The treatment team develops a treatment plan customized to the client’s diagnosis. Treatment services may include therapy in individual and group formats. Clients also work on cognitive restructuring. Cognitive restructuring is designed to help people reframe negative thoughts, improve mental well being and reduce anxiety. Clients also participate in social environment therapy and receive aftercare services.
The North Dakota DOCR also offers the Free Through Recovery program for offenders released from the facility. This program helps participants through peer support, recovery services and care coordination and connects clients with local mental health and substance use disorder treatment providers. Clients must be 18 years of age or older, involved in the criminal justice system, or transitioning out of prison, and at risk of criminal justice involvement. They must have a behavioral health condition and moderate to severe substance use disorder.
Care coordination helps participants access treatment in the community while addressing the barriers that keep people from succeeding. The services include care planning and referrals. They also monitor clients in collaboration with probation, parole and clinical services.
Recovery services may include access to education, supportive housing and meaningful employment. Services also include social support for families, nourishment assistance programs, spiritual engagement and parenting education.
Peer support connects clients with someone who is farther along on a similar journey. Clients receive advocacy, mentorship and additional recovery support.
